Azerbaijan has put forward its candidature for membership in the Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies (ICTs).
As an active ITU member since 1992, Azerbaijan has been closely involved in all ITU initiatives, and was previously twice elected to the Council.
The Council, which is the governing body of the organization, elects 48 members in 5 regions from 193 member countries during the Plenipotentiary Conference held every four years. Azerbaijan was first elected to the Council in 2014. In 2018, our country won the right to be represented on the Council for the second time.
In the elections to the Council and the Radio Regulations Board of the International Telecommunication Union, which will be held in 2022 in Bucharest (Romania), it is planned to re-nominate Sahiba Hasanova, the leading adviser of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies. Currently, agitation campaigns are underway at international events in this regard.
Sahiba Hasanova was elected to the ITU Radio Regulations Board as the first representative of Azerbaijan in 2018. She is an engineer with international experience in frequency usage and satellite coordination. She is currently one of the most active members of the Radio Regulations Board.
It should be noted that the Radio Regulations Board consists of 12 members. Only 12 representatives out of 193 ITU member administrations are elected to the Board. The members have been actively participating in the work of the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference for 4 years.
It is worth noting that the meetings of the Radio Regulations Board are held three times a year. In addition to radio regulations, the committee, as the global body responsible for the management of the radio frequency spectrum and satellite orbit resources, decides on procedural rules, including disputes between ITU member administrations regarding the use of radio frequencies and satellite orbits. Decisions are taken by secret ballot by a majority of at least 3–2 votes.
